Vedio: Defined and Elaborated

Vedio is a 5 letter word that is undefined in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. People from Morocco often misspells the word Video as Vedio. Algerians, Egyptians, Indians and Sri Lankans did the same spelling mistake, but not as often as the Moroccians or Morrocs (according to Batang Yagit).

So why are these people doing the same stupid mistake over and over again? It’s just because they don’t know the correct spelling of it. They are just so curious what is this Vedio thing, then started to explore about it with the help of the Internet. If you’ll google about vedio, it would return almost 7 million search results! Now, as you’ve noticed, it’s not only the mentioned nationalities above makes this obvious mistake, but also people from different countries. Well, for others, they don’t mind if they spelled it wrongl or not, the important thing is there are results about their query.

So even if it’s not found in the dictionary, they won’t bother, as people all over the world wide web accepted it as the correct spelling of such word. Others, I think, accepted it as a synonym of video, while others applied it as a word with the same definition of video. As far as I can see, and based on the search trends, there are still so many people who are unaware that the keyword that they are using is a misspelled word, specially in the mentioned countries above, because they are included in the top 10 “VEDIO FANATICS” based on Google Trends™ hehehe… All of these are just my observations, you judge! 🙂

  • Language is dynamic, it moves forward. Changes in language do not necessarily come from the scholars (because they have a tendency to want language to remain as is). Change comes from actual usage -- as people use language, it evolves. "Vedio" might just become an accepted word in the future, by virtue of its common usage.
